Since we like analagies this week, let me try one. Settlers games are to computer games like checkers is to chess. Or even like kickball is to baseball.

In baseball there are like 15 different pitches you can throw, in kickball there is that slow roller or the fast roller or the spin. In baseball there are hundreds of different batting stances, plus you have pitcher/batter matchups to consider and many other variables. In kickball you just kick as hard as you can and hope it isn't caught.

It is very difficult to model things like supply and demand, the fluctuations of populations, pricing, etc. with anything less than modern computing power.

To truly stretch and test the brain, you have to play complex games.

I would have to say that Cities and Knights (extension of Settlers of Catan) would rank among the best 'productive' games. Well, assuming you can remain on good terms with your spouse, friends and/or family during the game.

But I'm not a gamer in the sense of IT geeks sitting in front of monitors or TVs for hours. I prefer gaming it up on the court, field, or course. Heck, maybe even the pitch, I dunno. Far more fulfilling than a video game.

Nevertheless, I love the strategy involved in games like Settlers and, from what I can tell, Railroads! because they also offer some basic economics lessons.

Fun post Adam and a bit disconcerting at the same time. Did Obama even take Econ 101? Has he read "Good Ideas from Dead Economists?" Does he have the wherewithal to surround himself with people who HAVE studied economics when he is so deficient in that area?

'Irregardless' of his economic blunders so far and in the next couple years, I'm expecting the economy to straighten out in the next couple years. And I'm sure he'll be savvy enough to point to all these things he's done that made it rebound. 2012 will be much more hotly contested than we originally expected. You know, assuming the GOP will have a viable candidate. Obama certainly ain't sealing the deal right now. Never has been a good closer. But I digress.
