96 Team Tourny?

My feelings about March Madness have been well-documented (I can't find the link, but the bottom line is I'm one of the weird ones who prefers the NBA and doesn't get all that excited about putbacks and slash-and-kicks this time of year), but any accusations of partiality need be cast aside when I tell you that I think a 96 team tournament is ridiculous.

It's already a pretty big field where the lowest-seeds rarely make much noise outside the first round (though I'll admit it's fun when they do). You're not making room for better competition since 65-06 aren't exactly great teams. You're prolonging the madness and making more money, and that's it. So let's just lay aside any justifications of inclusiveness and call it what it i$--all about the Benjamins.

Since I know my brother authors and readers tend to like March Madness, I'd love to hear of anyone out there who thinks expanding to 96 teams is a good idea.

They need to go back to 64. I don't know why we can't give the worst little guy who won the conference a chance to get slaughtered by a big conference team just so we can fit in the 8th best team from the Big Ten.

No. Unless they do the same for College football, really.

I'm a fan of the 65 though, the play in game is awesome.

Why 96? Why not 1000?

Just eliminate the regular season and start with a massive, 6 month tournament. Sure, teams risk having a 1 game season, but every national champion will be undefeated!

96? We went from 5 movies nominated to 10 this year...oh, wait are you talking about a different march madness?

Good point, Mere. :) Last night was a pretty good show, I must say. It was great to see Avatar you know, NOT win all that much.

Oh yeah, at first I thought you wer talking about the 1996 tourney, which was my grad year from UK. Crazy times near my studio apt. 98 championship was the year I got my Masters from UK, not as crazy, as I lived further away from campus.

will there be another in 2010????

Having not gone to class, taken a test, or worked during the Thursday and Friday games of March Madness, I feel if not a (self-proclaimed) expert on the Madness, at the very least I'm a fanatic in the extreme sense of the word. and I would hate 96 teams, even if it meant UW could get in now. I just can't afford that many days off...

Can we get whoever is leading this charge to get transferred into the BCS department?

I can vouch that Azar is second-to-none in the category of unpaid NCAA basketball gurus. In addition to owning me in various Sporcle quizzes (the ultimate time waster), Azar's track record for watching the first two rounds speaks for itself.

96 teams is a horrendous idea. It's slightly worse than the idea of adding another regular season game to the NFL.

And for what it's worth, I'm cool with the play-in game. It's a fun little pre-game to the real dance and until a 16 seed downs a 1 seed, it's not a terrible tradeoff. Seems like every year some .500 team from SW Lafayette Poly-Tech somehow upsets the best team in their conference tournament and the play-in game mitigates it a bit.
