Uncle Sam Wants (to nanny) You
I am often told that I am unhinged, or over-the-top about how I feel about our intrusive government. But what I think or write is mostly irrelevant. It's clear that the aristocracy in D.C. doesn't give a damn about you or me or anyone else. They care only for themselves, and the power they can eliminate from We the People.
Brother Reid, the prominent senator from Nevada validated all of my concerns about our nanny state government today when he said: "Like those in the medical field, our responsibility as legislators is to care for all people, not just those that are fortunate. That's what this historic reform fixes. It starts to break down the wall between a class of Americans who can afford to stay healthy and another that cannot."
Ignore the fact that "caring for all people" will severely burden the vast majority of American citizens, and consider the following questions:
When did elected representatives start taking the Hippocratic Oath?
And when did only people "who are fortunate" monopolize being healthy?
Why should being insured be a "right"?
And how will universal health insurance eliminate anyone's poor health?
The Democrats are taking a very interesting approach to solving problems. I can outline it in 3 easy steps:
1. Identify the problem.
2. Make that problem illegal.
3. Problem solved.
[Another random number] people are uninsured. That is a problem, right? Yes it is! (but not really) But lucky for us, it has an unbelievably easy solution.
Make being uninsured illegal.
Problem SOLVED!
It's so easy, so obvious, that even a drug-addled fat blowhard like Rush Limbaugh can recognize it: "How many trillions of dollars have we wasted on the war on poverty? Why didn't we just make poverty against the law? Anyone earning under the poverty level will have to pay a fine or go to jail. Fifteen million people unemployed, throw them in jail if they won't work. Solvy dolvy. I mean we're just going to with the stroke a pen sign a law and fix the problem, look how easy it could be."
While we are at it we can outlaw guns, because they kill people and dead people are a problem. Fast food? Contraband! SUVs? Illegal! Stupidity, bigotry, racism? Banned! What about Trans Fats? Axed! (oh, wait, they already did that). How about those inconsiderate airlines that imprison passengers on the tarmac? Fine them! (also already done...) And so on.
I ask you this:
What is happening to the United States? Or rather, what has been happening for the last 60 years?
You probably know my answer.
Think about the question for yourself. Try and take off any partisan goggles you might be wearing, or any *ahem* labels (welcome back Sam) you might be using to determine what is right or wrong. Honestly answer the question: what is happening to the United States of America?
And then think on the follow up: Do you like what you see? If so, why? If not, why?
Your answer is due by Wednesday morning at 8AM. Any late assignments are subject to Brother Reid's wrath and a government tardy tax of up to $2,000. (HCR Code 34a43, page 2459, article 67, section 8, paragraph B, amendment 68)
One addition: I will admit that I am secretly hoping that the government succeeds in taking control of health care. That way I can bill them for any new bikes or skis - or any other equipment I need to go along with them. After all, I need those things to stay healthy, right?

Right now the smartest people in the country and world are figuring out how to get very rich off this new health care scheme.
This country is evolving in the the way 'We the People' Allow it to.
Who are you going to vote for the move back to where you think it needs to be, because the reality is, that to win higher office nationwide and in most states (Utah is an outlier) a candidate needs to be a capitulating centrist.
Act local, it is the most control we have.
I agree 100% Bob. Our political system was designed for local involvement, thus the entire concept of a representative republic. I think we have lost control of that model with apathetic citizens, career pols, and a general feeling of "I have no influence".
Which is why I am railing against the federal government the way I am. State and local governments are much more efficient, representative, and easier to rebuke or replace - although I want their power and influence limited as well.
It will be interesting to see just how serious the people of the United States are about reigning things in. A majority (according to various polls) oppose universal health care. If we have a bad government (we do) we only have ourselves to blame. And only we can fix it.
Your outline for how the problem solving process works needs to include a primetime TV message saying little of substance but expressing that there is no time for squabbling dissent. Change is urgent!!
I like how Sam's 'prodigal-esque' return is countered (within minutes!) with an Uncle Sam nanny post. Stay Classy Provo! :)
9.5 hours is "minutes"? I don't live in Provo. And have never claimed to be classy anyway.
But I think you were being snarky (as is this response...)
Glad you had the sense to sense the snark.
Those are big questions to digest in a comment but I don't want no additional tax burden so I'll give it a shot.
I was all about Health Care reform once upon a time. Still am in theory. But this so-called Obamacare will bring little reform if any. My first red flag was when I saw an ad on TV for health care reform funded by a pharmaceutical lobbying group. Wow. We will have the same old players playing the same old game.
But we're safer from terrorist attacks than we were this time last year according to the latest NSA and CIA reports so that is good news.
Sam, you still feeling snarky about the terrorist attacks? Detroit's a little different than NYC or the Pentagon.
That's heartland country.
And if it weren't for an apparently less-than-competent terrorist, we would likely have postponed football games and patriotism anew from both left and right.
just sayin.
Fort Hood?
Recent events and events like that which occurred in Ft Hood are not true indicators of how 'safe' we are. They look more like anomalies statistically. But they still do not determine how 'safe' we are. I spent 3 of 5 weeks in December in San Fran, Philly and NYC. Rode the Acela from Philly to NYC, LIRR multiple times to and from JFK, Went to ball games at MSG (GO CATs!!). There were lot's of guys roaming around in camo with assault rifles, but no one ever scanned me or my bags.
Airport security is leaps and bounds ahead of any other transportation security, and it (airport) is not difficult for some to get through. When I came back from China and The Philippines in September, my luggage was not checked in customs, just a wave through.
