The ChiComs Have Better Tiger Coverage

This is just completely awesome. In fact, I think it redefines awesome. I knew American journalism was terribad, but who knew the Chinese gossip journos were so damn good?

Good to know that Tiger is so passionate about the virtue of privacy for intimate matters, but he holds in low regard the virtue of keeping intimate activities within marriage.

Is it better for celebrities/athletes to just not get married? Single celebs who cat around with cocktail waitresses, models, etc. can generally maintain a clean image like Tiger has until now. Colin on the Herd a couple day ago used Derek Jeter as an example.

I am not trying to make light of Tiger's transgressions, I'm just trying to layer in context here. And I am just as disappointed as anyone else.

But there are plenty of celebs/athletes who have done sleazier things no doubt, but because Tiger is married he's now the biggest dirt bag in sports.

Again, not justifying anything, I would just like to air this out.

If the Most. Disciplined. Man. In. Sports. cannot tame his Big Bertha then how can we, the dirty masses, have any hope of ever doing so?

He can drive a ball straight as an arrow with thousands of people breathing down his neck, but apparently can't resist the devilish temptations of some tramp doing the same.

I have a hard time getting worked up about this.

I'm pretty sure most celebrity marriages have these sorts of agreements where one or both parties look the other way over these types of things.

Tiger isn't just faced with temptation as we can envisage it. He literally walks into room after room of attractive women implicitly and explicitly telling him they want to be his next conquest.

I'm not justifying his actions, but I am cautioning against the tossing of stones at him.

Michael Wilbon was arguing that there has likely never been a world's best athlete to not have these same issues, and there likely never will be. Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Ali, Mantle, Rose, Wilt, Magic, MJ, A-rod, Tiger. And that's not news. And the reason is as RG describes it.

But, at some point there has to be an athlete at the top who CAN withstand it. I thought TW could.

I know you don't want to Bitner, but you have to throw your daughter's namesake, MJ himself into that crowd as well.
A few things come to mind as I think of a case like this:
1) When these guys (meaning superstar celebrities) get married, do they expect they will withstand the temptations better then their contemporaries, and expect to have a monogamous relationship, and then fail; or right from day one, do they expect to have a marriage with the type of side benefits that a superstar appears to be entitled.
2) How many superstar wives (political wives especially) understand from day one that they are making a trade off between monogamy and power, wealth and fame. Or how many of them think they will be the 2% (kind of like missionary girlfriends) who will have a different marriage. How many slowly realize over time the deal they have made? How many once they realize the deal they have made, are still okay with it, because they decide they like the power, fame, fortune more then they would like a boring life married to a monogamous accountant (not that there is anything wrong with accountants).
Just some thoughts.

MJ was on that list in my comment. He's no different than the rest of the superstars in this respect.

To you point, however, this is probably Elin's first time coming to grips with it. I'm sure Hillary threw a tirade or two in the house when she first discovered Bill was a cheat. Eventually Elin will be numb to this.

It's probably well advised to take Steve Young's approach and just wait to get married until your playing career is over. Not that he faced anything on the level that Tiger faces, but Steve probably didn't ever put himself in a position to meet a VIP hostess either. You get what you want at that level. And Tiger wanted it.

David December 4, 2009 9:58 AM

you did indeed. i stand corrected

Ryan P Giles December 4, 2009 2:41 PM

Sometimes I wonder if it was actually easier for Steve Young.

Think about it, Tiger and everyone else knows they can get away with it because everyone does. But Steve knows that people all around are waiting, wanting, hoping for him to slip up and prove he isn't the goody two-shoes he professed to be.

He probably had a little something extra inside telling him that one slip up and there would be no cover up possible.

Why do any of us assume the wives are as white and pure as the driven snow?
